Oppositional Defiance Disorder
“Many scientists have reported that underactivity of the right frontal regions of the brain is associated with anger, hostility, and violent behavior. This disparity can be either genetic or the result of TBI. In my experience, this condition is more often found in males, which makes sense because males are more likely than females to have head injuries. When a child has this disparity, with or without some form of ADHD, it is essential that he receive behavioral treatment in addition to neuropathy. The older the child, the more difficult he is to treat because of the many behavioral problems that have merged over time. He usually has problems in school because of defiance and inevitably concludes that he is both stupid and a “bad seed.” To protect himself from this painful self-concept, the child engages in bravado and antagonistic behavior. Family problems are inevitable, featuring major hostilities and resentments. Hence, family therapy is also usually required. Treating this condition is an excellent example of the complexity of treating a child with a “learning problem.” Only highly trained neurotherapists with significant psychological expericence should handle such cases.” pp. 153 Biofeedback for the Brain by Paul G.
