PTSD: How To Heal A Traumatized Brain

PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and uncontrollable thoughts related to the event. This type of brain trauma can have long term negative effects on individuals and may include suicidal or homicidal thoughts.

As a result, scientists in the field of brain science are continually researching new ways to help treat PSTD. In one case study they used neurofeedback to alter the plasticity of the brain and help people gain control over a restless mind. A team of researchers sought to determine if a single session of neurofeedback training would affect the state of anxiety and arousal in a group of 21 people with PTSD related to childhood abuse.

Each person was observed given an MRI scan before and after they underwent a 30 minute EEG neurofeedback session. Researchers were looking for any differences in connectivity within areas of the brain.

They found significant correlations between the EEG and fMRI network activities. Subjects also reported a greater sense of calm. These results indicate that neurofeedback can have a direct role in the way the brain processes emotions.

While this study was a small sample of affected patients, it certainly helped to shed some light on the mechanisms behind neurofeedback, and it could lead to more interventions targeted at helping the growing number of people learn how to better regulate their symptoms, even outside the clinician’s office.
